On Saturday, November 1st 2014, it is again: the Africa Day 2014! The day for political and social debate on Africa and international cooperation. This year, the annual Africa Day held in the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam. Our main guests this time Mo Ibrahim, the Sudanese telecoms tycoon who is committed to democracy in Africa, Joyce Banda, former President of Malawi, Lilianne Ploumen, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, and Fatou Bensouda, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague . This year there is a special focus on the theme “Democracy, Good Governance and Human Rights.” This theme and many others will be discussed by interesting speakers from home and abroad in more than 30 workshops, debates, lectures and presentations. Thus Ugandan gay rights activist Moses Walusimbi of Uganda Gay On Move (UGOM) Nigerian environmental activist Godwin Ojo, and Ugandan democracy expert, James Mwirima will participate in various workshops. There is also a rich cultural program, which includes Wim Brands writers Frank Westerman and Femke van Zeijl will interview. Enjoy two documentaries Movies That Matter, the Amnesty International Film Festival, live music, dancing and much more. On our information market are nearly 50 organizations – the African Young Professionals to Oxfam and stalls where you can buy handmade African designs. You can speed date with politicians, buy books at the Atheneum stand, African food and Ethiopian coffee. Also go to the “Democracy in Africa Debate”, where ao Joyce Banda and Mo Ibrahim participate and spokesman debate between MPs Roelof van Laar (PvdA), Agnes Mulder (CDA), Eric Smaling (SP) and Ingrid de Caluwé (VVD ). After the closing reception with music in KIT, we end the day in style with the after party “Africa at Night” in Desmet Studios where African food and live music not to be left out by headlining Ntjam Rosi
